Most people know me as Lynn, but I have a very special niece who dubbed me "Cookie" almost 16 years ago, because I shared my cookie with her one afternoon. It's the only name she's ever called me, despite hearing me called Lynn by others. I love it so much that that I have adopted the name as my crafting alter-ego, as well as my "grandma" name for our first grandson born this May. Whether you call me Lynn, Cookie, or Grandma Cookie, I hope you will feel confident that you are working with someone who is determined to deliver the finest quality service.
My interest in sewing began at a very young age. My grandparents owned an upholstery business. It was totally family-operated, with grandpa and grandma and their eight kids eventually filling all positions. The youngest got the task of tearing down furniture that was brought in to re-upholster. Once they removed the old covering, they gave that to my mom, who used it as a pattern to cut new fabric. Mom then gave the new fabric to my grandma, who worked her magic sewing a new cover. When she finished, she handed it off to my grandpa and uncles, who took it and made that piece of furniture look better than brand-new.
I used to spend my school breaks and sick days at "the shop" with my mom, watching the process, until I was old enough to join in as well. My first experience sewing was at my grandma's sewing table, with her industrial Singer sewing machine. She started me out making a simple pillow - a rectangle folded in half and machine stitched on open sides, leaving a small opening to turn it right-side-out. I remember being so excited making those first straight stitches on that intimidating machine. I proudly turned the small pillow out, and took it to grandma for my next direction.
This is where my LOVE for sewing began. Grandma could have quickly shown me how to finish my pillow with a straight stitch across the seam to be done. Despite being busy with her own work, however, Grandma had the patience to take time to show me how to hand blind-stitch my little pillow closed - because that was the BEST way to finish a pillow. "If you are going to do anything, big or small, you should do it right." Teaching me how to do it took time and patience, but she spent the time showing me, then sent me to work on it myself. Once I finished, I proudly brought it back to her for review. Grandma looked it over carefully, then pulled out her seam-ripper, and ripped out a large section I had worked so hard on. She explained what I had gotten not quite right, and sent me back to work again. When finished, I brought it back to her - a little more hesitantly this time. Grandma ripped a smaller section this time, and sent me back again. By the third review, I got her solemn nod of approval.
To this day, when I work, sew, craft, or whatever, I still picture my Grandma's hands and that seam-ripper, and the lessons I learned in that shop. I find myself thinking "Would Grandma rip this?", and know that if I always produce work to that standard, I'll always have happy customers.
